NOURISH THE SKIN YOU'RE IN
Today we ask Lucy Knight founder of Guilty Free vegan cosmetics brand what her top 5 tips are to 'nourish the skin you're in'
1. What do you do as part of a regular routine to look yourself?
I practice clean eating as I believe that you truly are what you eat, so lots of organic fruits & vegetables, I also use a lot of herbs & spices which are known for their healing benefits to the body. I do have a bit of a sweet tooth but I stick to dark chocolate - high in antioxidants and generally try to avoid processed foods as it depletes my energy and tends to give me spots! If I’m feeling stressed I do some meditation or yoga which I should probably do as a daily routine but I realised that I was causing myself more stress trying to fit it in, so now I practice as & when!
2. What are the key things you have found that nurture self-nourishment?
I think that one of the most important things is continuing to grow your self-awareness being able to recognise how you are feeling, how certain situations affect you and when you need to take a step back and breathe. I think this really is the key. I think a lot of us also suffer from guilt and an inability to say no to other people’s requests and end up taking too much on. However if we don’t allow ourselves time to relax away from any duties or expectations then we will be useless to other people anyway!
3. What could you do more of to nourish the skin you're in?
Apply more of Skin Elixir! I already try to take care of my diet and only use natural/organic makeup but I think that my skin would benefit massively if I applied more creams that nourish it, for example after showering, etc. When I’m in a bit of a rush I tend to miss this part out but the times when I do apply a good quality organic cream there is a visible difference to the vitality reflected in my skin.
4. What top tips have you got to give others around your working life to stay on top?
I have a routine which helps me stay on top of things but I do struggle with an endless to do list! I’ve found the best way around this is to prioritise what I actually need to do against what might be nice, but isn’t a priority. I also use a free time management software (Toggle) so whenever I start a new task I can record the duration, this has been so helpful because I can actually see where my time is going! In the past I felt like the day had just flown away, but now I can see how I am spending my time and where I could improve!
5. What are the things you couldn't live without that are key to your happiness and nourishment?
This might sound funny but probably my pet ferrets! They are so happy & playful that they evaporate any of my stress! They remind me to live in the moment and have fun. I think that animals can be quite therapeutic!
I am passionate about animal welfare and when I went vegan 3 years ago I found it quite hard to find a makeup brand that was 100% vegan, cruelty free, natural & not extortionately priced, so I decided to start my own! My overarching goal is to spread awareness about the animal derived ingredients in non-vegan makeup & the cruelty involved, as I feel that there’s a lot of grey areas when it comes to this topic. However, I believe it’s important to live these values with compassion rather than judgement and to be informative and open to dialogue as otherwise I feel it can alienate people & create more disconnect.
