NOURISH THE SKIN YOU'RE IN
Today we ask the bellisimo, Fi Morris, Nottingham based Yoga teacher, for her top tips to nourish the skin you're in.
1. What do you do as part of a regular routine to look after yourself?
Most mornings I’ll have hot water with lemon, (Hell yeah H20!) or a green tea with mint. I love coffee but try to reduce my caffeine intake where I can. I love to cook healthy, fresh, colourful food & to make healthy snacks 80% of the time, the other 20% of my diet is taken over by my incredibly sweet tooth, but it’s good for the soul right? I’m constantly in & out of gyms with work, which is convenient for making time for regular exercise, I enjoy building strength & working with weights, but I also try to exercise outdoors at least once a week, esp. during the summer months. Some fresh air & a walk in the park with a friend can sometimes do more for my health than burning it out on a treadmill.
Skincare wise, I try to use natural products with simple, effective ingredients. I exfoliate, cleanse & moisturise, & couldn’t live without a good lip balm. I tend not to wear much makeup anymore on a day to day basis. I’d rather work on improving my skin & natural appearance, so that I don’t need to clog up my skin with too much makeup. It also allows me to spend that little bit longer in bed before those early morning yoga classes!
2. What are the key things you have found that nurture self-nourishment?
Creating a work/life balance is so important. I love my job, & I’m very lucky to be doing something that I’m so passionate about, but I also think it’s important to make time for myself & for loved ones. I’ve realised the importance of health over wealth, which is why I invest time into nurturing meaningful relationships & friendships. I try to surround myself with like-minded people with good, positive energy; people who are supportive of me, just as I try to be supportive of others. There’s so much more to life than being financially successful or socially successful (I.e. Having a nice car, fancy job title, marriage, show home etc). In the end, who is it all for? Is it because it makes you truly happy, or is it because we’re conforming to social norms? No-one will ever say at your funeral ‘She had a lovely car, or a lovely shoe collection’. Creating memories, enjoying life experiences & bringing value to your life & others’ lives is so much more nourishing for the soul.
3. What could you do more of to nourish the skin you're in?
I’ve been trying to cut down on my chocolate/sugar addiction for a long time! But sugar is a drug & this is something that I’m really struggling with. It would also be nice to be able to indulge every now & again in a sports massage!
4. What top tips have you got to give others around your working life to stay on top?
I don’t yet have children & I struggle to stay on top, so I’m not sure I qualify for dishing out top tips, Haha. I seriously do admire anyone who is mastering this ‘mother, wife, businesswoman/superwoman’ role in life. I know it’s easier said than done, but I’d say that realistic organisation & planning is key. Just simple things like batch cooking healthy meals on a Sunday evening for the week, ensuring that it’s easy to nourish your body during a busy week, rather than reaching for unhealthy, convenient/processed snacks when the h-anger kicks in. Also, trying to incorporate exercise into a busy work, work, work lifestyle, E.g Walking to the shops instead of driving, taking the stairs instead of the lift, or maybe finding a sport/hobby/gym class that’s enjoyable & sociable, as opposed to viewing exercise as a punishment. Not only does this give you some breathing space from work, but it allows you to focus on you, to release those positive endorphins to instantly feel happier, healthier & more productive in your life & career. And if you don’t always find time to exercise/cook healthy meals every time, don’t be too hard on yourself. We’re only human, and punishing ourselves won’t help us grow in any way.
5. What are the things you couldn't live without that are key to your happiness and nourishment?
A positive mindset & outlook on life always helps, meditation, & a close circle of friends/family/support. I also couldn’t live without my passport, I LOVE travelling, experiencing new cultures & learning so much about the world. I find nourishment through personal development; I am always looking to develop my yoga practice & business. I thrive from continuously learning, growing & challenging myself in a healthy way, (not running myself into the ground). I also find so much happiness in sharing my passion for yoga, health & wellness with others & to see my students continuously growing physically & emotionally.
I’m a 26 year old Drama graduate who recently took the plunge & made the decision to quit an unhealthy, toxic corporate career in order to pursue my passion as a full time yoga instructor in Nottingham. I haven’t looked back since & feel so welcome here. I have a keen interest in all things health, happiness, fitness & wellness. I also believe in having your cake & eating it, or having that glass of wine if it makes you happy. I’m a modern yogi, currently teaching in gyms & studios across Nottingham as well as hosting workshops at festivals throughout the Summer. I’m also available for 1-2-1 private sessions & perhaps some free sessions in the park soon.~Happiness is a choice.
