NOURISH THE SKIN YOU'RE IN
Today we talk to the fabulous Debs O'Brien of DO.Yoga for her pearls of wisdom to nourish the skin you're in.
1. What do you do as part of a regular routine to look yourself?
As a new mum I have found it increasingly difficult to find time for me. It's a daily issue I am sure most mums have. However, I know it's super important to make time. You can't pour anything from an empty cup right?! So I grab mini-windows of yoga practice as often as possible, mostly during nap times. It's the one regular thing I can do just to take time to breathe. I love to have hot Epsom salt baths at the end of day too, when I am not too tired to take one! Drinking as much water as possible should be central to everyone’s routine as it hydrates you and your brain, helps your skin look clear and vibrant and generally gives you a well-needed boost, even when you’re run down.
2. What are the key things you have found that nurture self-nourishment?
Yoga for me, either teaching or practicing, is my ultimate way to nurture self nourishment. Before I became a teacher I would always come back to yoga whenever I needed some TLC. It's therapy for body and mind. Some weeks I practice everyday, some weeks I only manage an hour.... but I will always come back to practice....
Food is another thing that is so important to me. Eating junk always makes me feel rubbish both physically and mentally. Eating fresh real food helps me stay focused and feel great and fuels the day for the jobs at hand.
3. What could you do more of to nourish the skin you're in?
I could slow down and be a bit kinder to myself I think. This is something my daughter is teaching me. It's ok not to complete that impossible ‘to do' list. Always try to focus on the stuff you do achieve and not the things you haven't managed to do.
Stepping away and asking for help is another thing I need to do more of - something I am learning. For example, battling with the ‘mum guilt’ if I am not with my daughter if I treat myself to a manicure. It's ok to indulge in mum treats. We deserve it right? And you will be a happier, healthier Mum if you do that!
4. What top tips have you got to give others around your working life to stay on top?
Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. So important to remember to breathe and slow down, something in our fast paced society that's difficult to do, especially with a constant need to check social media and emails - I am guilty of this too, just ask my partner
Don't compare yourself to others either. Everyone is just doing their own thing...,You are YOU and you are ENOUGH.
These blog questions are like therapy in themselves, great reminders for myself!
5. What are the things you couldn't live without that are key to your happiness and nourishment?
My family and friends, Yoga, good clean food, laughter and sunshine! Combining all of the above on a daily basis makes me a very happy and lucky lady! (Daily sunshine can be a challenge!).
