NOURISH THE SKIN YOU'RE IN
How important do you find self-nourishment is?
It's a funny thing, setting out in a conscious attempt to be more gentle with one’s self and prioritise self nourishment. And now, that I find myself a busy Business Owner and also a single mum it’s even more vital.
What makes it so damningly important is that, if we truly wish to find more peace and joy and celebration in our world, I recognise we have to start with ourselves.
What works for you in terms of striking a work/life balance?
I really think this is the time of the Portfolio Career when we can be confident leaving the traditional Corporate world and be multi-passionate about in what area we work in.
I really feel your business and life can look exactly how you want it to look. There are no rules. Complementary offerings mean for me that I can serve my clients in different and wider ways. I am not just a Yoga Teacher, Personal Trainer, Run Coach every day. Varying what my working day looks like by including all the things I am most passionate about in terms of wellness, means that a life/work balance is felt and I love the change up of focus for me, between the high-energy group yoga classes, specialised Corporate work and charity placements and the intense individual coaching sessions.
What is your ideal regular beauty routine?
As a mum of three with a business to run, I have nowhere near as much time to spend on myself, as I would like. Gone are the days where I’d lovingly make my own hair masks, apply and then relax in the bath with a latest fashion magazine for an hour. I find myself flying from school run, dog walk, run, teaching Hot Yoga to being with a Corporate Client, then back to the gym before the school run again! i need products I can rely on and take minimal time to apply. I have had to adapt my adapt my beauty regime over the years to accommodate my ever changing lifestyle. It is still possible to go from shabby chic with minimal time and effort.
My day starts with a lemon water to drink, face cleanse and day moisturiser under bronzer and mascara and at night-time, I like to double cleanse before applying Night Oil and Frankincense Moisturiser. I also like to try and bathe in Dead Sea Salts as often as I can for about 20 minutes, these evenings seem more and more limited, but when I can I find it really useful for fighting the aches and pains of exercise, whilst also boosting and softening the skin and relaxing the mind before bed. In my ideal world there would be more of these evenings, they tend to be more so when my children are staying with their dad.
How do you nourish your body and mind?
I always try to choose foods that make me feel like I am nourishing my body, fuelling my body best; not restricting my body. I reach out to those passionate about functional health, take advice on nutrition and supplementation from those who study it and build passionate careers such as Anna Marsh and DR Lacey Chittle.
We are lucky there are so many knowledgeable and excellent females making wellness their passion also in particular specialist areas of Health.
I make sure I roll out my Yoga Mat daily either at a Hotpod class or when I'm not teaching there – I do so in the chaos that is home. This is both important to keeping my skin youthful (most are surprised to learn I am 43) and my mind relaxed.
I often do Sun Salutations great for kick-starting the body in the morning and although the same movements as a burpee in the Crossfit gym working with the breath and slowing it down allows a graceful stretch and tone to the body.
If all else fails, every evening I find a quiet place to sit with no disturbances with my dog, when everyone has fallen asleep, apply my wonderful Skin Elixir products on my cleansed skin and set a timer for five minutes. I find even if I don’t mediate, having a set time to allow my mind to settle and focus on the natural pace of my breath feels as good as a break. If I have a particularly busy mind, I journal then listen to a mediation by Deepak Chopra, iIhave to be honest though his voice gets me every time – I’m usually asleep in five seconds rather than in a mediation!!
Spending time with great female friends is incredibly important to me.
Why do you think there’s a growing demand for natural products?
I really feel due to a widespread lifestyle shift, caused by a multitude of factors but including those I am most passionate about; environmental and animal welfare awareness and an improving health and wellness education, I know myself and many of my clients are demanding a greater transparency in our purchases. We all seek to know where their products come from and what exactly they are made of, both in food and cosmetics - it is also made extra special by supporting smaller business people whose businesses grow because they are passionate about what they do and that shines through with the excellent natural products they offer such as those found at Skin Elixir.
What contributes the most to your happiness?
I try to cultivate mindfulness. Being present in my own life and being grateful for what I have I believe will attract some more positive things into my life. When being positive in this way I believe I will have more and more things to be grateful for. This way of thinking brings a cycle of positivity.
Happiness to me is the accumulated moments of presence and gratitude that I acknowledge day to day brings a feeling of peace rather than a drama fuelled 'what if', 'when' cycle - no thank you!
What lifestyle and beauty tips would you pass on to others?
Do more Yoga, Move Daily, Eat more plants, practice gratitude and go to sleep each night knowing that you did your best and that is enough!
I am a local Business Owner, Yoga Instructor, Personal Trainer, Run Coach, Sports Therapist and most importantly mum of three plus a very cute Cocker Spaniel called Charlie!
After my own transformation journey through Health and Fitness, personal weight-loss and injury struggles I decided to share that knowledge leading me to found the relatable, fitness-lifestyle movement called Body Buddha.
That business built up of all things I feel passionate about now services a cross section of the East Midlands community from busy Mums to Corporate clients, Family members young and old and even special populations such as my continued work as Health & Wellness Provider for Brain Injury Survivors, attending Headway Service Nottingham.
