NOURISH THE SKIN YOU'RE IN
We are back and today we're getting the low down from the delightful 'snack' innovator; entrepreneur, Sophie Wood on her top tips to nourish the skin you're in.
1. What do you do as part of a regular routine to look yourself?
Exercise and eat well.
I swim often and I always feel 10 x better afterwards.
I cook from scratch so I know what is going into my food- ensure that my staple foods eg. Bread are sourdough long fermented which makes them more digestible for the gut.
2. What are the key things you have found that nurture self-nourishment?
Avoiding too much routine as you can lose touch with what your ‘self’ actually is- I once did Myers Briggs which identifies your personality type, although I was dubious at first I actually did agree with the result. The main points that I took from it was that I like a bit of the unknown and whatever I am doing I need to see the value in it. I make a fermented snack which uses the by-product of beer- this is a small step towards combating food waste and environmental damage from food production which I feel strongly about.
3. What could you do more of to nourish the skin you're in?
Drink more water. Probably I should get a better skin care routine, I am always rushing around and don’t really stop to think about it- which is ironic when considering that I am very conscious to eat well. Read more. I studied Classics at University and I love reading about all the strange antidotes and beliefs they held back then.
4. What top tips have you got to give others around your working life to stay on top?
Take a step back sometimes- for me having a business can be overwhelming- making decisions are ultimately all down to you. I find that going out and seeing friends or family can be really refreshing and having that space away can allow me on return to approach an issue in a more logical way.
5. What are the things you couldn't live without that are key to your happiness and nourishment?
Food, sitting down to a good meal at the end of the day. Music, when I am in the bakery I am usually alone for long periods of time so I find the radio Jazz FM, is a must! I also love animals- when I come home my cat always runs to greet me at the door which always makes me smile. Walking and countryside I love the freedom of it- I am originally from the Peak District so I always feel most at home when I am out there.
Sophie is originally from Sheffield and now lives in Nottingham with her partner George and tabby cat Sandy-Belle! Sophie studied Classics at University with a focus on the topic of Roman food writing, this led onto a career as a food technologist. Deciding to train as a baker at the School of Artisan Food led onto her most recent venture as an entrepreneur. The business is called Barmies which uses the ancient leaving ingredient ‘Barm’ produced as a by-product from the brewing process to make a fermented snack which beer reductions inside.
