NOURISH THE SKIN YOU'RE IN
We talk to skin-health guru Misia Smith, owner of Soothe Skin, known to those she helps as 'the magic facial lady' for her top tips to nourish the skin you're in.
1. What do you do as part of a regular routine to look yourself?
As a skin specialist, I’m a little fanatical about my skincare regimen. I’ve made taking my makeup off at bed time my little ritual. It only takes five minutes but it’s my five minutes devoted to me and my skin. I find it really meditative.
I cleanse with an oil that I adore the aroma and texture of, spending time massaging it into my skin with lifting and draining movements. I wipe it off with an organic cotton cloth and follow up with a hydrator, serum, eye cream and moisturiser.
2. What are the key things you have found that nurture self-nourishment?
Most definitely booking ‘time out’ in my calendar to do an activity I’ve always wanted to do. I hear a lot of people say they don’t have time to do stuff for themselves, but I believe you’ve got to make it otherwise you just become your job, a mum, a partner. Taking time out ensures you don’t lose your own identity. It is tricky as sometimes work does take over but so far, this year I learnt how to throw pots on a wheel and how to make copper and silver jewellery. Doing something different feeds my soul and re-energises me. Work is getting busier and busier but next month I’m going to make great efforts to learn how to glaze those pots I’ve made!
3. What could you do more of to nourish the skin you're in?
I could stop sabotaging myself! I’m allergic to wheat but still fall into the trap of ‘treating’ myself to a slice of toast and end up feeling quite ill.
I started running last year but I’m not very good at keeping up a routine, so I `could do more to keep myself fit and healthy.
4. What top tips have you got to give others around your working life to stay on top?
Delegate! We can’t be Wonder Woman all the time. If you can afford to have help, do it. If you can ask for help from family, children and partners, ask! Nobody knows you’re unhappy with something until you tell them and there’s no point in struggling when you don’t need to.
If finances are tough, negotiate a skills swap. You might just offer something someone else really wants and you’ll both benefit.
5. What are the things you couldn't live without that are key to your happiness and nourishment?
